Libraries are for all.
Libraries are for all.
We are a group of engaged citizens across the state of Virginia who demand that every citizen's First Amendment right to read freely remain unrestricted. Libraries are built as spaces for all people, and therefore the books on their shelves must reflect any and all possible viewpoints, lifestyles, and beliefs. We support the work of librarians to make libraries safe spaces for all Virginians.
We work together to protect our local libraries from censorship. We watch for and call out the tell-tale signs of censorship: fearmongering to sow distrust of librarians and library organizations in order to justify taking control of the library's processes such as collections management and categorization.
1. Pay attention! Censorship thrives under the radar, under the guise of polite words and civil meetings. It's happening all over VA.
2. Speak up! Go to board meetings, share online, and tell all those in power--from library boards to school boards to local legislators and community leaders--that you support our local libraries and our First Amendment right to read free of censorship.
